I woke up one morning and she said it was over.

Just like that.

I remember walking around the house trying to assimilate the new information I’d learned. We were no longer.

The little pug we shared, followed me out to my car and jumped into the passenger seat, wanting to come with me. She wrenched him out and walked into the house we’d walked into together, as a couple, less than 12 hours before.

She didn’t look back.

I drove that long drive back home to my empty, dogless house.

My heart and life suddenly unpunctuated; by her or our little dog. I was free falling. It was was the start of winter and my bones were cold, so very cold.

Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months… and then I saw you and brought you home.

Suddenly, everything was warm again….
